You may have noticed that there’s a new voice behind the Complete Digital Photography blog. Hi, my name is Liz LePage! Let me give you a quick introduction into who I am and what I do:
I’m a professional photographer, a creative retoucher, a dedicated educator and a life-long artist. I was lucky enough to be raised in an artistic household, with a father who loved photography and a mother who loved quilting. They both taught me to always try new things and to never let fear stop me from living. Their lessons have carried on with me and seep into every part of my life: I’ve never thought of myself as just a photographer. And I think that’s my biggest asset. I’ve tried everything from paper making to screen printing to oil painting, and I am constantly searching for new ways to express myself.
For me, photography is a combination of passion, ingenuity and basic technical understanding—with a heavy emphasis on the first two. My hope is that the work I produce can exude the enthusiasm I have for my subjects and the imagination I use to create images with impact.
As an educator, I want to help other photographers to find that passion for their work. Too often these days, people are picking up cameras and pointing at whatever is in front of them with no fervor. The images may be generically beautiful, but cause viewers to feel nothing. As photographers, we should strive for more than just beauty—we should attempt to produce bold work that exudes a true vision. Through a basic understanding of light and color, how cameras work and what post-processing software can do, I hope to help other artists find a way to express their passion and creativity. Even if you can’t seem to access it, trust me – it’s in there.
Photography isn’t my full-time job—I actually work a part-time gig at a local bookstore—but it is my true love. After a few difficult years and a creative lull, I’m finding my own photographic footing again. As I spring back into this world of portraiture and post-processing, I hope that the lessons I’ve learned over the last decade can help more than just me.
